My thoughts:

1) Dave makes a great point about the need for more interaction between Hollywood and Silicon Valley. I whole-heartedly agree that the two are much more similar than you’d think.

2) I think there should be a new (web) TV show that is a variation of Entourage, but instead of being Hollywood actors and agents, they would be Internet entrepreneurs and engineers. I still haven’t figured out who would play Ari, but think I could be onto something here…

3) Dave Morin > Adrien Grenier. Just sayin ;)

Adrian Grenier stopped by Path today to talk shop about the Internet. He had a refreshing perspective. It would be nice if more folks from Hollywood stopped through Silicon Valley. It is odd that these two incredibly creative industries, separated by geography but similar in production processes, rarely ever interact with each other.

I am absolutely loving these Nike Women ads popping up around the web. This one is my favorite. The copy is brilliant (I bolded my favorite line):

This is so awesome. I’ve always wished that I could type using my own handwriting or what it would be like to have my handwriting created into a font. This looks so simple and easy to do. Very cool!

I am really psyched about TEDWomen, coming this December to DC in a two-day conference to focus on women from around the globe and their issues, innovations, insights, the whole shebang. Considering we’re talking about 50% of the population from around the globe - statistically slightly more, even - it’s sort of amazing and mouth-dropping that focusing on women is called “an emerging story,” but hey - TED calls it like it is, not like it should be. From the website:

Over the last several years, our ideas about women have changed. Investing in women and girls was once seen as a radical notion; today, its value is clear. A new lens reveals women as powerful change agents: In developing nations, women and girls hold the vital link to economic growth, public health, political stability. In the West, generations of educated women are forging new directions in the sciences, arts, business and beyond.

To track this emerging story, the first-ever TEDWomen will explore in depth: Who are the women who leading change? What ideas are they championing? How are they shaping the future? And so, the Old Spice Man videos are over. I loved these excerpts from this story summarizing how the videos were made. Kudos specifically to P&G for not letting company politics and reviews get in the way of real-time marketing responses:

“Those people are having more fun than I’ve ever seen anyone have in a shoot like this. That’s part of why it’s doing so well. It’s genuinely infectious, it transmits itself through the internet in a massive way.”

Tait says that Old Spice’s parent company Proctor & Gamble exhibited incredible bravery in allowing his team to write marketing content in real time, with little to no supervision.

“There is such great trust [between the companies],” he said. “But we are being very responsible. They have given us a set of guidelines and if we get close to the edges we contact them.”

That trust is all the more necessary because of how new this really is, in some ways. “If the message that comes out of this is that you can make TV commercials in 30 minutes, then we’re all out of a job,” Tait jokes. “This is something new. We’re operating on Internet time but with a level of quality you’d get on a TV slot. That combination was what really got many peoples’ attention.”
